Advice relating to specific types of bladder weakness

Diet

Keep hydrated.  Drink at least 6 to 8 glasses of water a day to keep your bladder functioning properly.  Avoid bladder-irritating foods like tomato based and spicy foods, citrus fruits and chocolate.  Remember, caffeine and alcoholic beverages are diuretics that can also contribute to leakage.

You can limit your leakage by spreading out your liquid intake throughout the day instead of drinking a lot at one time.  For example, drink one cup of liquid every 2 to 3 hours.  To prevent nighttime leakage, try not to drink anything after dinner or at least 2 hours before bedtime.  Liquids such as water, apple, grape and cranberry juice are healthy choices for your bladder.

Exercise

Tone up.  Strengthen the muscles that control your bladder with simple and discreet Kegel exercises.

After just 2 to 3 months of regular exercise, you’ll notice a difference.  It’s never too late to start pelvic floor exercises.  Men who have started exercising in their 70s have felt improvements.  And once you incorporate the exercises into your daily routines, they will become as natural as brushing your teeth.

Other Helpful Tips

  • Try to get the balance right.  Don’t force yourself to urinate “just in case”.  But don’t hold back too long either.
  • Don’t strain.  Relax.
  • When using bladder leakage products, you should change them about every two to three times a day.  If you need to change more often, then you probably need a product with higher absorbency.
