Caregiver Corner: Making the Switch to TENA

We sat down with Pete, the main caregiver for his son, whose MS causes him to experience incontinence. Pete shares his experience as a caregiver and how using TENA products make all the difference.

When did you become a caregiver for someone who is incontinent and what are some of your biggest challenges in providing incontinence care? I’m the primary caregiver for my son who was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS) back in 2006. After moving him to St. Louis with me, he started to experience significant challenges with his condition, at which point he became completely incontinent.

Making sure he’s comfortable is our main concern. We’re always looking for ways to avoid excessive drying or any sort of skin deterioration that can occur with the use of a catheter 24/7. Another thing that’s a top priority is maintaining his quality of life, as he attends an adult daycare during the day. Making sure that he has everything he needs and that he’s still able to be social and comfortable can be difficult to balance but is of the utmost importance to us.

What were your main priorities when choosing incontinence products? I was mostly concerned with his comfort and making sure that he’s staying dry throughout the night. For a while, he was having to wear five incontinence products overnight, as well as plastic underwear. However, absorbency wasn’t my only concern. As he has some limited mobility, I also wanted to make sure the product was convenient and gave him the liberty to dress himself. I looked primarily for pull-up incontinence products as they’re much easier to use than some of the other designs. As long as the product was comfortable and convenient for him, I wasn’t really concerned about the cost.

Where did you learn about TENA products and how has using TENA products impacted your day-to-day? My daughter Nicole introduced me to TENA. I was talking to her about her brother’s nighttime routine and how he was still experiencing leakage even with five products, so she recommended that I give TENA a try. I had heard of TENA before while compiling research on different products, but it was a matter of finding the right product to fit his needs. Nicole suggested the TENA Pro-skin OvernightTM Underwear and it was a game-changer.

I just couldn’t believe it. I didn’t think the TENA product would be that different, but sure enough, it was. This TENA product not only improved the condition of his skin, but it also saved me time by not having to wash his bedding on a daily basis. Additionally, the pull-up design allows him to be independent and dress himself, which is not only helpful on my end but I’m sure, is empowering for him as well.
