Shirley's Wish Sets Sail

Shirley Payne grew up by the sea and started sailing at age nine. As an adult, she led a local Mariner Girl Scout Troop, teaching girls from her community the skills—and exhilaration—of sailing. At age 90, residing at Brookdale South Bay Retirement Center in Kingston, Rhode Island, her passion for sailing hadn’t flagged.

When Shirley heard that Team SCA, an all-women’s sailing team, was racing around the world in the Volvo Ocean Race and would be stopping at a nearby port, she wanted to meet the brave women competing in this momentous journey. TENA proudly partnered with Wish of a Lifetime to launch Shirley’s wish. After a lively lunch with Team SCA, she set sail from Newport Harbor with them, seaworthy with her Team SCA lifejacket.

We applauded Shirley for showing us all that a zest for living is ageless.
